The Tulare Police Department encourages you to visit the California Office of Traffic Safety website to answer many of your questions as they pertain to child safety seats.

California’s Occupant Protection Law

As of 2012, California law requires that children who are under 8 years old or who are less than 4 feet 9 inches tall be properly secured in the back seat in a proper child restraint system. Additionally, you and all passengers must wear a seat belt or you and/or your passenger(s) may be cited. If the passenger is under 16 years old, you may be cited if they are not wearing their seat belt.

Estimates from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) indicate that 33 children age four and under would have been saved in 2008 in California had they been properly restrained in a child safety seat.
