About:
The Tulare Public Library is lucky to have one of the largest collections of genealogical materials in Central California. Housed in the library’s “Hillman Family Library of Local History & Genealogy”, otherwise known as the Genealogy Room, it contains the following resources to assist the family history researcher. The Genealogy / Local History Room is located inside the Tulare Public Library at the far south end.
Resources:
- Over 7,000 volumes of various genealogy-related reference books and publications.
- The California Collection, which consists of California-related history reference books.
- The Hyde II Collection, which consists of genealogy-related books available for checkout.
- The Tulare Advance Register newspaper on microfilm.
- The Visalia Daily Delta (later Visalia Morning Delta) newspapers on microfilm, years 1892 - 1928.
- Limited copies available of Porterville Evening Recorder newspaper obituaries - call the Genealogy Room for information.
- Many records relating to Tulare County, such as birth, death, and marriage certificates, and cemetery indexes.
- City/phone directories and subject vertical files
- Census records
- Surname files of information other researchers have provided
- Internet access
- Library subscription to Ancestry.com
- Microfilm and Microfiche readers
- Copy machine
- Helpful volunteers who can share their knowledge and experience.
- Monthly genealogy-related programs (March - November)
The Sequoia Genealogical Society
The Sequoia Genealogical Society (SGS) is the support organization for the Tulare Public Library’s Genealogy Collection. The SGS finds and/or purchases most of the materials for the collection and provides volunteers to assist patrons, organize materials, conduct research and respond to telephone and email inquiries from all over the world.

Kay Ellis Memorial Scholarship
Our Sequoia Genealogical Society, based in Tulare, California, is pleased to announce the offering of two Kay Ellis Memorial Scholarships, one for $750 and one for $500, which will be awarded in May of 2023. Applicants who wish to compete for these awards must be Tulare County high school seniors who will be graduating in the 2022-2023 school year. The scholarship will be in the form of deposits in the students’ names at the colleges/universities they plan to attend in the 2023-2024 school year.
Each applying senior must submit a Sequoia Genealogical Society Kay Ellis Memorial Scholarships Application and all requirement as outlines on that application and its description. All required information must be received by the Society by Friday, April 21, 2023.
